Green Limos in the Big Cities

While the debate about global warming and the resultant climate change continues, one thing is sure - we can’t continue to putting more CO2 into the atmosphere than plants can absorb, without affecting the balance of our ecosystem. New York's limousine fleet is going green; plans are in place to make the city's fleet of 10,000 hired limousines twice as fuel efficient, as part of proposals to reduce carbon emissions and reduce air pollution. The plans would require the city's so-called ‘black cars’ to meet fuel efficiency standards of 9.4 litres per 100 kilometres (25 miles per gallon) in 2009 and 7.8 l/100 km (30 mpg) in 2010.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the levels of fuel efficiency required were only achievable using hybrid technology, which mostly involves cars running on a combination of gasoline and battery power. The city announced last May that its signature yellow taxis would all be running on hybrid engines by 2012. Last year the Mayor unveiled an ambitious program to cut the city's greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent before 2030

In the UK there has been more focus on fuel efficient vehicles due to the higher cost of fuel. Limo hire companies realise that more fuel efficient limousines contribute not only to a cleaner environment but to higher profits as well. Following the UK’s lead, New York is considering a congestion charge, similar to London’s, for drivers entering Manhattan, in an effort to reduce car use in the city an improve air quality.
